Vita Winter Festival is cancelled this year due to a lack of volunteers and committee members.

The festival, which started as an event for dog sledders, has been in operation for five years (excluding the COVID pandemic) with sledders coming all the way from Alaska and Quebec and attracting visitors from the Southeast.

“Basically, we’ve lost so many committee members and just not enough people to run between committee members and volunteers. We’re basically running on empty,” said committee president Jerry Lubiansky.

Lubiansky said they just lost their treasurer and he himself has resigned and is only staying on until a new committee can be formed. He said the festival was a way of bringing in something different to the community.

“We’re a small community it was an attraction for the community to draw in (visitors).”

Aside from the dog sledding, other events held at the festival included a toboggan run, junior hockey tournament, curling bonspiel, horse sled rides, and kids activities.

The plan going forward is to advertise in print and on social media to attract five committee members and 10 to 15 volunteers so that the event can take place next year.

Those who are interested in joining the committee or volunteering for the 2026 Winter Festival can call Lubiansky at 204-371-0581.
