The Steinbach Arts Council is calling for applications for its new 2025/26 season of art exhibits for its Hall Gallery.

“We encourage everyone to apply whether they think they should or shouldn’t. Everyone has a skill. We definitely take everyone into consideration,” said Cassandra Kornelsen, manager of community programs at SAC.

Although anyone can apply, SAC is encouraging submissions from student and emerging artists. For the 2024/25 show season, the arts organization had more than 16 submissions, but only five showings of 10 individual artists were featured. Two group showings focused on the Kornelsen School student exhibit and the Southeast Open Juried Exhibit.

“We have a criteria and we have a committee that meets and goes through the applications and goes through the artworks and collaboratively we make a decision,” said Kornelsen. “But that’s not to say that there is 16 available (slots) we also run our Southeast Art Exhibit so depending on how many slots we have available would be how many artists we accept.”

The criteria for which artists are chosen by the committee, which is made up of established local artists, depends on the skill level of whether the artist is an emerging artist or a student artist.

“So, basically, it’ll just be based on each medium. The committee would decide on quality verses what the medium is to see. If it’s an emerging artist there could be things that maybe aren’t necessarily of the highest caliber, but they’re still quality,” said Kornelsen.

Artists are asked to submit three to five photos of their work and a brief biography with their applications. Applications are available online and an email should be sent to Kornelsen at cassandra@steinbacharts.ca. For questions or to get an application email Kornelsen or call 204-346-1077.

Artists can do a half show of 15 pieces or a full show of 30 pieces.

“(We do this) basically to give the artist recognition for their works. It gets the artist out in the community and establishing a certain level of visual arts in the community and it celebrates their skill,” said Kornelsen.

Deadline to apply is April 18.
