Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk called it a record year of housing starts as council reviewed the final building permit tallies for 2024.

The numbers show that this year building permits valued at more than $77 million fit into the residential category which saw 344 total dwelling units added. That includes 89 single and two family units and 255 multi-family units.

That’s the most dwelling units ever added in a single year, a 14 percent increase from the previous record of 302 set in 2020. This year and 2020 are the only years that the city has surpassed the 300 threshhold.

The commercial side saw nearly $28 million for nearly 118,000 square feet.

Total permit values came to $104.9 million, the third highest in Steinbach’s history.

The 2023 totals were higher, coming in at $204.8 million with 2012 coming in second at $122.2 million.

Coun. Susan Penner made the motion to accept the December numbers, describing the growth as encouraging.

“Things are moving in Steinbach, and I think that’s really encouraging for our community,” she said.

Coun. Damian Penner agreed and in seconding the motion said the numbers are incredible for a community this size.

Mayor Earl Funk agreed, expressing his optimism for the coming year.

“I see no reason why 2025 won’t be a great year as well,” he said. “Development is alive and well in our community.”
