The Winkler Flyers stormed into first place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League as of Jan. 21, and they can turn to a star Eastman forward for a big reason why.

Brody Beauchemin, who grew up and played his minor hockey in Ile des Chenes, was on fire for the Flyers last week, notching eight points in two games. Those efforts earned him star of the week honours, the only skater to be recognized alongside goaltenders Mitchell Kathleer and Cole Sheffield by the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Beauchemin’s impact can’t be measured just by his boxscore stats.

In a game against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, Beauchemin nearly single-handedly won the game, scoring twice while his team was short-handed and chipping in the game-winning goal alongside two assists.

His first of the game was an absolute beauty. First, Beauchemin poked the puck into the neutral ice while deflecting an attempted pass from the Wolverines, then beat every player to the puck with his speed, before absolutely undressing the Waywayseecappo goaltender with a fake shot and deke to his backhand, which he used to roof the puck into the net.

Winkler would win 7-4.

A few days later, he contributed to three of the Flyers’ four goals in a 4-1 victory over Virden. The Flyers are in the middle of a league-high 13-game winning streak, defeating Neepawa Jan. 21 to extend the streak further.
