The City of Steinbach approved what was essentially their own application for a subdivision at their Tuesday meeting, which will see one large piece of land along Acres Drive turned into 12 industrial lots.

The 21-acre parcel located on the south side of Acres Drive between Keating Road and Industrial Road is owned by Steinbach Community Development Corp, an organization solely funded and managed by the City of Steinbach.

They proposed to create 12 lots and a new street which will be named August Cove.

Lot sizes will vary which in a city planner’s report to council will fit the need.

“The city has seen a demand for smaller industrial lots over the last five years, with both private developers as well as the city creating additional lots to meet that need,” the report stated.

The majority of lot sizes range from 0.75 to 1.74 acres. One lot is 2.5 acres while another totals 7.8 acres.

Street construction is planned for this summer with lots becoming available for sale and development by fall.

Councillors voiced their support for the subdivision.

Coun. Susan Penner made the motion to approve, saying the industrial park is a hub of activity.

“Lots are rapidly being sold and there’s an increasing demand for more lots,” she said.

Coun. Michael Zwaagstra agreed.

“Anytime there’s more opportunities for businesses to start up and have a new location I think that’s positive, and we want to see our industrial park continue to grow and expand,” he said.

Acres Drive was extended to Keating Road in 2022 which created seven new lots at the time.

“They were basically sold as soon as they came on the market,” Mayor Earl Funk said. “I think this is great for the city.”
