A pair of restaurants in Manitoba’s Southeast are taking part in this year’s Stone Soup Week fundraiser to benefit the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba (CNCM).

From March 17 to 23, the sale of soup from participating restaurants will generate donations that will be used to support school meal and snack programs.

“Stone soup is a vibrant week-long event where participants can support local school meal and snack programs by purchasing soup from participating restaurants across the province,” CNCM board member Kirsten Mundle said. “Food has a unique way of fostering connection and community, and our annual Stone Soup fundraiser embraces this by combining the power of food with the timeless folktale it’s named after.”

The public can use the online interactive map and voting page to explore a list of participating restaurants and vote for their favourite soup.

The CNCM partners with over 400 school meal and snack programs, supporting 64,000 students in the province.

Santa Lucia in Steinbach and Smitty’s in Niverville are both participants in the event.

The second year for Smitty’s, a spokesperson said as a family owned Canadian business, they feel it’s important to give back any way they can.

Smitty’s is offering a three-cheese Smokey gnocchi bacon soup described as “three-cheese cream soup with homemade gnocchi and bacon topped with crispy parmesan crusted croutons.

Santa Lucia chose Avgolemono soup, a classic Greek soup made with chicken, rice and potatoes with a blend of egg and lemon giving the broth a velvety texture and tart flavour.

“Avgolemono is one of our family’s traditions, so we felt it was an appropriate choice to share for the Stone Soup event,” Trisha Burch of Santa Lucia said in an email. “We hope everyone’s contributions help CNCM further fund school meal and snack programs throughout Manitoba.”

She added that supporting the community has always been important to Santa Lucia which will also support CNCM through sales of their Hal and Joe charity pizza for fall of 2025.
