Gabrielle-Roy win 4th consecutive AA basketball championship

Les Roys cruised to their fourth consecutive AA varsity boys basketball championship this weekend, defeating the Immanuel Christian Falcons 85-65 in the provincial finals, hosted in The Pas.

The Ile des Chenes-based school became the first varsity boys team in the history of the Manitoba High School Athletic Association to win four consecutive championships.

Stellan Chammartin was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The top eight teams in the province qualified to the finals, with a single elimination bracket. Zacharie Normandeau and Riley Chammartin were named to the all-star team.

Les Roys won their three games at the championship by a combined 305-153.

Grunthal’s Green Vally Pirates also qualified for the tournament, but were defeated in the first round by the Margaret Barbour Spartans.

In the provincial boys varsity AAA championships, the Lorette Scorpions were felled in the semi-finals by Winkler’s Garden Valley Zodiacs, losing 77-59. Elijah Maple-Stevens was named a tournament all-star.

In the A girls varsity tournament, the Ross L Gray Raiders won the consolation final after dropping thier first game of the championship bracket to Elm Creek 44-40.
