The scene was dramatic to a casual observer. Fire trucks waited on the road while others filled the driveway as a home in southeast Mitchell burned to the ground on Saturday.
But it was not the result of an accidental blaze, no lives were threatened and no possessions lost.
Instead, RM of Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe explained it was only an exercise.

It was only a drill but the end result was dramatic as the RM of Hanover Fire Department let their temporary practice home go up in flames March 29. The house on the southeast of Mitchell was donated to the department to use as practice that day, ending with its destruction.
The house was donated to the department for training. Because it was in a populated area, Wiebe said they didn’t continue to relight and extinguish fires the way they might do in a more isolated area.
“We didn’t want to inconvenience the neighbours,” he said.
Wiebe said the department doesn’t solicit houses from private citizens but welcomes them when one is available.
“If we can get a suitable property or a suitable home that we can safely burn, we will do that,” he said.
Wiebe said the training is important and simpler than trying to create the scenario in their training facility.

“It’s quite valuable especially for our new members who haven’t seen a lot of live fires,” he said.
Members from two stations took part in the drill, with others needed to keep trucks in service throughout the RM.
