Jayce Penner from Green Valley School in Grunthal has joined the RM of Hanover council as its newest youth member.
“It was my social studies teacher (who) suggested it to my parents and we looked into it, and I really took an interest when we talk about politics in his class,” said Penner.
Penner’s social studies teacher is City of Steinbach Coun. Michael Zwaagstra and he contacted the RM about Penner being a youth council member.

“I think (young people need to be involved in politics) because that will be the future for us. We can educate them in some way then absolutely I think it’ll be a benefit for not only the municipality, but the province. Because who knows where they’ll end up,” said Reeve Jim Funk.
The 14-year-old said what he likes about being in politics is hearing everything that is happening in the community. He found the first meeting interesting.
“Yeah, I think (young people need to be involved in politics). I think it’s good for kids like me to be in politics because it’s a really good career path.”
Penner said he would like to be a Crown attorney when he becomes an adult. “I take an interest at looking at criminal cases and that whole idea of being a lawyer.”
Penner also noted politicians are very successful and that “being in politics can definitely lead to success later in life.”
