COLUMN: Report from the Legislature – Easter blessings and good news

Easter is always a special time in our family as it is for many people across Manitoba. For some, it’s a long weekend to catch up on rest. For others, it’s chocolate bunnies and egg hunts with the kids. But for Christians throughout the province whose faith is rooted in history and an empty tomb, Easter is a celebration of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s a time of renewal, purpose, and hope.
That spirit is in the air as we settle into April and round the corner into May. March certainly went out with a roar but there is good news for the weeks ahead as I know farmers are getting their equipment ready and watching the skies and soil conditions closely. Manitoba’s latest flood forecast shows a low to moderate risk of major flooding this year, and if favourable conditions hold, the floodway likely won’t need to be used.
One important project to be aware of this spring season is the south floodway bridge along Highway 200. Built in 1965, this bridge has reached the end of its lifespan and will be undergoing major reconstruction. Plan your travels accordingly as work is expected to close the bridge to all traffic later this summer, with the new bridge set for completion in fall 2026. Once finished, it’s expected to serve the region for another 40 years.
At the end of March, I had the honour of attending the official ribbon cutting for Jette Studios in Niverville. This new full-service film and TV campus is a big step forward not only for Niverville but also for Manitoba’s growing film industry. This new state of the art facility shows real confidence in the talent and potential of rural Manitoba.
I want to thank Juliette Hagopian and her team for choosing and believing in Niverville. The studio will bring good jobs, new careers, and creative opportunities for our youth. The previous Progressive Conservative government helped pave the way, with over $40 million invested into local infrastructure, new direct flights between Winnipeg and L.A., and expanded tax credits which have made Manitoba one of the most competitive film hubs in North America. As a result, film production in our province has more than tripled since 2016, and added over $800 million to our economy over the past five years.
Our region is truly blessed. Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter, a safe spring, and many good things to come in the months ahead.
