Ritchot makes call for artwork to adorn park signage

RM of Ritchot is calling on artists to create signs that represent belonging to attract and direct visitors in the municipality’s parks.
“We saw it done by Ramsey County just outside of Minneapolis and they did a similar project and we thought it was a good project to bring to our community as it helps create a sense of belonging…,” said Emma Dequier, recreational program coordinator for the RM of Ritchot, noting the project was possible through a grant from Southern Health.
The signs have to show inclusivity and welcome and a sense of belonging. They must answer the question, “What artwork would make you feel welcome in a park and like you belonged?” Although Dequier couldn’t say how many signs will be made, she did say artists from all over the Southeast are encouraged to enter their designs with artists from Ritchot receiving priority.

“Signs will be placed in our parks and we’ll do some type of unveiling party pop up community event to celebrate the signs. We do plan on having an interactive board for residents to share what belonging means to them to promote…social connections through interactive community events that also encourages conversations on belonging and inclusion for them,” said Dequier.
Kristopher Lencowski, director of operations – parks and trails for Ramsey County, said, “A researcher at Macalester College, Dan Trudeau, evaluated the impact of the signs, and overall, we had positive feedback, with many reporting that the art helped to create a sense of belonging.”
In the survey, reaction to the artwork was largely positive. More than 75 percent of white visitors said they strongly felt welcomed to the parks by the signs and almost 85 percent of people of colour said they felt the same. Words used to describe the signs included everything from beautiful, cool, inclusive, colourful, and welcoming.
Future phases, anticipated this year for the county, include signs for park entrances, boat launches, dog park rules, beach rules, and more.
Mayor Chris Ewen said the project builds on the RM’s longstanding commitment to creating inclusive public spaces. “Parks are the heart of our communities. The Signs of Belonging project is not only about showcasing local talent, but also about reminding every person who visits our parks that they have a place here.”
Artists from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a special focus on ensuring that diverse voices are represented. An artist fee will be provided for each selected piece, and the RM will manage the production and installation of the signs.
Anyone interested in submitting their work for consideration are asked to make a submission of interest along with their portfolios to program@richot.com until May 23. If you have any questions, contact Dequier at program@richot.com.
