It’s been 16 years of showcasing local talent by Steinbach Arts Council that has made K.R. Barkman Concerts in the Park series so popular. This year, the concerts return with a twist.
Showing for the first time is Steinbach’s own version of Shakespeare in the Park with Looking Glass Theatre’s snippets of famous Shakespearean plays.
“We will be performing a 30-minute set of some of the great scenes and speeches from Shakespeare. We have pulled selections from Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and more,” said Laura Kathleen Turner, co-founder of Looking Glass Theatre.

Steinbach Arts Council’s performing arts coordinator, Tara Schellenberg, said the concerts reflect the diverse talent in the community, the rich history of Steinbach, and the appetite for expressing oneself creatively.
“We also have a lot of community supports for the arts because there’s people that come to the K.R. concert series and don’t necessarily have a personal connection to anyone who’s playing, they just come because they know that it’s happening in our community and they want to come and support it.”
The free concert series takes place at K.R. Barkman Park in Steinbach at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until June 10. People are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs for seating. A rain call will be made by 2 p.m. on SAC’s social media the day of the performances.
“We’ve got a wonderful line up with lots of different genres and it’s just a great free community event,” said Schellenberg.
