As many are reeling in the aftermath of the devastation caused by the recent wildfires in our region, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took prompt action to help ensure the safety of the residents, cottagers and all those who were at risk. To all the first responders, firefighters and volunteers as well as municipal leaders, specifically Reeve Loren Schinkel, Mayor Jack Brisco and their councils, the emergency response teams, Parks branch Manitoba and EMO who have worked tirelessly around the clock to protect lives, homes and livelihoods – your dedication, bravery and selfless efforts have been truly amazing and have had a significant impact on the outcome. Your abilities have not gone unnoticed.

On behalf of all in the Lac du Bonnet constituency and with the utmost respect to the family and friends of local residents Sue and Rich Nowell who lost their lives in the fire, may our condolences and prayers bring you comfort and help to ease the pain of your loss. Our entire community grieves with you.

To all the residents and businesses from surrounding communities who continue to show extraordinary kindness by stepping up to provide food, shelter and storage, who offered to board livestock, pets, and anything else they could do to help those forced to flee: You are the very best of us.

I would also like to thank our neighbouring provinces for supplying further emergency assistance to combat and contain the extensive fires. Whether you were on the front line fighting the fires or working along side in the affected communities to provide aid to firefighters and displaced residents, your services are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to continuing efforts by Manitoba Wildfire Service and Manitoba Hydro many evacuees have been able to return to their homes but many have not. To those who have suffered damage to their homes and property we pray for restoration and provision. May you receive the resources and support you need to rebuild. Please remember that it’s the people who stand together in hardship that lift each other up when the weight of loss feels too great. Together we grieve, we heal and move forward.

Summer is still coming and there is still plenty of activities and events to look forward to in the beautiful Lac du Bonnet constituency. I encourage you all to support our grass root organizations by participating in their events that help to keep our communities strong and healthy.
