A newly proposed transit system for the City of Steinbach is giving the community a chance to help create its first logo.
Created by the South East Equity Coalition, LinK Transit is intended to provide reliable and affordable transit services to residents, enhance their mobility and connectivity, reduce social inequalities and create greater links within the community.
A press release issued by LinK Transit states the logo should illustrate the importance of linking people together and enabling community.
“It will be simple, bold and eye-catching,” they said. “The logo will show the public nature of transit and be used on signs, vehicles, websites and promotions.”
LinK Transit was presented to city council at a May Strategic Priorities Committee meeting where it received verbal support.
It will have designated stops through the city and users will request a pick-up, through an app. The app will use the requests to plan a route for the drivers and direct users to the designated stops near them.
They also plan to offer shuttle service to and from special events in the city, at the Southeast Event Centre, Summer in the City, Steinbach Arts Council events and more.
Getting to this stage is a big step forward for Gay Boese and the rest of the South East Equity Coalition.
Boese said they’re thrilled to be moving ahead.
“With verbal support from city council, we are inviting people from the community to add their comments and to design a logo for LinK Transit,” she said.
She added that they see affordable and reliable transit as an equity issue.
“All people need to have the ability to get to jobs, medical appointments and social times,” she said. “LinK Transit is all about building connections.”
The plan is also supported by other organizations.
Olesja Schwabauer of Eastman Immigration Services said public transit is the number one need for newcomers to the community.
Jo-Anne Dalton of Steinbach Family Resources described transportation as “critical for families with young children because it enables reliable access to healthcare, education, childcare, and essential resources like food and supplies.
“Without it, isolation can compound existing challenges and deepen economic and social disparities,” she said.
Logos or requests for more information can be submitted to linksteinbach@outlook.com or dropped off at their booth at Summer in the City.
The contest is open until July 15 with the winning logo set to be announced in September.
