Parkhill School is perhaps one of the most sun filled schools in Hanover School Division. With soaring windows that go from floor to vaulted ceilings, it has windows in every classroom, and a generous amount of space for children to learn and explore.
“I think the natural light and the open spaces – there’s lots of open spaces to do different types of learning, to go if you need some quiet spaces. It’s just a really beautiful building,” said principal Kim Koop.
Construction of the school started in 2023 with an estimated cost of $39.7 million. The two-storey 62,304-sq.-ft. structure will house 311 students with the possibility of an additional 300. There will be 19 classrooms, two gymnasiums, a library, a music room, a multi-purpose room and three multipurpose open spaces, an art room with a storage room, a life-skills suite, a hygiene room, and associated support spaces. The kindergarten and Grade 1 classes will be on the first floor with the remaining Grades 2 to 4 on the second floor.

The facility will also have daycare space for 74 children run by Happy Feet Early Learning Centre.
“We are hoping for (a) very welcome centered learning building (with) strong relationships with our students, our families, welcoming (them) to the community, we’re very excited for that,” said Koop.
Construction of the building will be to provincial standards which means it will be LEED Silver certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a globally recognized green building rating system.
LEED provides a framework for designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining healthy, efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. This means that the building will adhere to environmental guidelines of sustainability, such as the logging of waste during construction and the regulation of temperatures after construction to conserve energy.
Parkhill School will open the first day of class Sept. 4.
