Softball provincials put on hold due to smoke

Wildfire smoke continues to wreck havoc on summer sports throughout Manitoba, with the provincial softball championships the latest losers.
While the U13 AAA championships hosted in Friedensfeld were spared any cancellations, the U17/U19 AAA championships, both hosted in Stonewall, had to be stopped before the round robin was even finished.
The playoffs for both age groups will be held July 26 at Quarry Park.

Wildfire smoke has cancelled sporting events across the province this year, from the Manitoba High School Athletics Association’s track and field, to soccer matches, to baseball games.
The Eastman Wildcats have a 4-0 record in round robin play so far in the U17 division and the combination Eastman/Westman U19 team has a 2-0 record.
With better air quality in southern Manitoba, the U13 AAA championship was played, with the Interlake Phillies defeating Eastman in Friedensfeld to take home the title.
With their silver medal finish, the Wildcats earned a spot at the Western Canadian Softball Championships in B.C., beginning Aug. 7.
The U15 AAA softball championships are also set to take place this weekend in Winnipeg. The Wildcats are undefeated in Manitoba this season. The U15 national championships will be hosted in Winkler this year.
