Critters and cornhole at Sprague Fest

Residents are gearing up for the annual Sprague Fest and Show and Shine Car Show.
The festival, which has run for nearly 20 years, kicks off Aug. 9 with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m.
Doris Hovorka, chairperson for Sprague Community Centre, said it brings people together who wouldn’t usually spend the day in the area.

“My favourite thing is that you get a lot of people like the older people that used to live here and even the younger ones who come back for that day,” the 86-year-old said. “They’ll come in with their families and help support our community.”
The fest first started as an extension of Canada Day celebrations, but it was pushed back later in August to have a separate event just for the community, Hovorka said. She’s been an organizer since it began.
It’s been difficult in recent years because many of the neighbouring villages in the area host their own events, pulling people away who might come to Sprague Fest, she said.
But Hovorka is still expecting a big turnout this year. This year marks the first time the festival has a petting zoo for the children. Goats, pigs and a miniature horse will be among the critters on display.
Besides the petting zoo addition, the fest will have a pickle ball and corn hole tournament, along with face-painting and a silent auction.
“It’s a fun day for everybody, it’s a good fundraiser for the community,” she said.
Hovorka said there’s nearly 50 volunteers signed up to flip flapjacks and organize the games for the kids.
The proceeds raised from the festival go towards keeping the centre running, she said. This fundraiser is important because it’s one of the only chances for revenue, Hovorka said.
The parade starts at 10:30 a.m., and Bingo begins at 2:30 p.m.
