You might have noticed a new name writing stories for The Carillon.

That’s because Matthew Frank has joined the editorial team as the paper’s newest reporter.

Frank is an old-fashioned newshound and chases the thrill that comes from sniffing out stories. He grew up in Winnipeg and fell in love with learning more about his community and reporting on the things they cared about.

A recent graduate from RRC Polytech’s Creative Communications program, Frank has finished internships at the Winnipeg Free Press, The Globe and Mail and CBC Manitoba. During those stints, he covered stories on national, provincial and local issues. Frank has previously reported on the Canadian and U.S. tariff war, child welfare issues in Manitoba and the 2023 Carberry bus crash.

Whether it’s knocking on doors to get info on a police investigation or running through downtown Toronto to cover breaking news, Frank believes the best journalism happens away from a desk and out in the field.

Reporting relies on relationships, and Frank knows trust needs to be built and maintained between media and communities.

While daily journalism is important, Frank relishes the chance to dive deep into different topics. Frank believes journalism is an irreplaceable tool for shedding light on important issues, holding officials accountable and informing the public on things they care about.

He’s excited to join The Carillon and learn more about Steinbach and Southeastern Manitoba. Feel free to stop and say “Hi” to Frank if you spot him running with a notebook, pen and camera.
