The international body tasked with managing the Red River has decided to review two North Dakota dairy farm projects, the province says.

The International Joint Commission, a shared waters management group between Canada and the U.S., directed the International Red River Watershed Board to review the permits granted for the dairy farms, an Oct. 9 Manitoba press release said.

Environmental concerns were raised about two planned large-scale dairy farms, both located nearly 2.5 kilometres away from the Red River. Both dairy farms would have a combined 37,500 cows. Advocates previously told The Carillon potential manure runoff could spike nutrient levels and damage the Red River and Lake Winnipeg.

The review will judge the farms’ ecosystem impacts, such as water quality and nutrient levels, the press release said.

The International Joint Commission didn’t respond to interview requests.
