Community comes through for cancer support group

A buzz of excitement filled the air in the banquet room at Smitty’s on Oct. 25 as 80 spinners took part in Beauty, Bikes and Brunch, an event designed to raise funds for Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS).
Warehouse Cycle Studio instructors peddled along with attendees, taking them through their paces. Those who finished enjoyed brunch from Smitty’s, while also receiving energy drinks from Supplement King, free skin consultations from Skin Rehab, Sonne Clinic and Sophia & Rae Aesthetics.
SCSS executive director Cindi Rempel Patrick said a total of $8,133 was raised, thanks to the motto, it takes a village, which included community minded businesses, volunteers, media and the spinners.
“Everyone contributes a little and the outcome results in important services for those facing a cancer journey in our southeast region,” she said. “We are so pleased that these funds raised remain right here, in the pockets of the families who need them, to relieve some of the barriers and stress that comes along with a cancer diagnosis.”
The much-needed funds will be put to work in two ways.
A portion will be used to support their transportation program which provides rides to cancer treatments in Steinbach and Winnipeg to patients from 88 communities across the Southeast.
A portion will also be used to expand wellness programs, which align with sponsoring businesses. These include skin screening clinics, swim and fitness for survivors and lymphedema treatments.
Rempel-Patrick said an event like this one depends on the coming together of event supporters, door prize contributors and everyone who took part.
“SCSS is so proud of our community partnerships and collaborations,” a Sunday news release stated. “Because of their support SCSS can provide hope.”
