Manitoba’s up-and-coming stars showed the future of hockey is bright in the province, claiming the Western Hockey League Cup Oct. 26.
The WHL Cup, which was hosted in Red Deer features the best WHL-committed U16 talent from the four western provinces, and Manitoba went undefeated en route to a tournament victory, including a 6-1 blowout over B.C. in the final.
Dominion City’s Crosby Mateychuk, who is a prospect with the Vancouver Giants, was named to the tournament all-star team. The defenseman showed some flair, nabbing the game-winning goal in Manitoba’s 3-2 victory over bronze medalists Alberta.
Mateychuk jumped up into the rush after winning a puck battle at the defensive blue line, beating everyone up the ice and one-timing home a goal from right in front of the net, prompting celebrations.
Mateychuk is playing for the Eastman Selects U18 AAA team this year. He has 11 points in just six games.
