Steinbach Arts Council is once again holding its popular Corks and Canvas fundraiser for the month of November.
“That is one of the things that came out of the pandemic that we kept that was a real success,” said executive director David Klassen.
Corks and Canvas used to be a fundraiser that was held at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre, but when the pandemic hit, the organization decided to hold the fundraiser in people’s homes.
“In the pandemic, we had the shift so we did small at home packages and that ended up being an incredible way to reach new networks of contributors, new donors, and new people who didn’t necessarily know about us, and our projects and what we’re raising money for. We ended up being able to raise significantly more funds with the at-home packages,” said Klassen.
SAC creates 12 wine and appetizer packages for 12 at home fundraisers. Klassen said by holding the fundraiser in someone’s home, the intimate atmosphere allows people to learn more about SAC and its programming. The money is used to expand programming and start new initiatives.
About 150 people end up participating from the 12 households raising about $7,500 to $10,000. It costs $375 per package and hosts are encouraged to ask for donations from their guests, according to Klassen. Sarah and Andy Beaver have generously offered to match all funds collected up to $3,500.
SAC will also use the funds for three new programs they are looking to implement, one of which is the therapeutic arts initiative.
“We really believe that the arts have evolved as a healing tool, really, contributing to personal wellness and overall wellbeing,” said Klassen, noting money will also be used for seniors programming and youth musician mentorships.
“These are projects that are on our radar and that we know we need to develop. Every dollar that we raise goes into us building our programing. We’ve grown a lot in the last while. We’ve taken on a lot of big projects and these are just a natural progression for us to continue growing those sorts of programs (which) we are able to provide.”
