The RM of Hanover has seen a rise in building permits this year compared to last year and most of those builds are happening in Mitchell.
Between Jan. 1 and Nov. 17 of this year, the RM issued 415 building permits worth a combined $110 million compared to last year’s 343 building permits totaling $63.8 million.
The breakdown of residential new construction in Hanover saw 32 applications for accessory buildings; six multi-unit residential builds (87 dwelling units); eight secondary suits; 159 single family homes; and seven two family homes (14 dwellings). These numbers don’t include permits for renovations or additions.
“(Hanover) is a great place to live and between the five communities that we have, there’s a lot of opportunities for the kids to go to school and for recreation, that seems to be a big drawing card,” said Coun. Brian Esau, councillor for the ward.
Out of all the towns in Hanover, Mitchell received the highest amount of building permits totaling $21 million.
New residential construction permits totaled 177 compared to last year’s 133, and brought in about $73 million to the RM’s coffers compared to 2024’s $46 million. Overall, the number of dwelling units approved is 60 percent higher this year than last year with 31 percent of residential permits issued for rural areas. Mitchell received the highest number of residential permit applications at 45 ($14.7 million) followed by Kleefeld at 32 ($8 million), Grunthal at 14 ($6.7), Blumenort at 20 ($7.6 million), and New Bothwell at 10 ($4 million).
“We have a fairly good selection of building lots right now. And some of the other communities are, there’s a limited amount of lots at this point due to, we are waiting for the Red-Seine-Rat (wastewater plant) to get completed or get started. And the second thing is we’re sort of a bedroom community to Steinbach. And a lot of people, just want to live outside the city, and there’s a really good attraction to Mitchell with all the schools and recreational opportunities that are available to them so it draws a lot of people to moving to Mitchell,” said Esau.
