Stuartburn reeve hired as Eastman Tourism Association’s executive director

The Rural Municipality of Stuartburn’s reeve has taken the reins of an eastern Manitoba tourism group in hopes of bringing more attention to local attractions.

Michelle Gawronsky was hired as the new executive director for Eastman Tourism Association on Jan. 1, after previously serving as the board’s secretary since 2024 and a board member since 2022.

“It’s much easier for businesses and tourism groups throughout the region to know who to talk to,” she said.

Gawronsky said board members approached her in November about applying for the opening. So far, she’s committed to being in the role for at least one year.

One of her goals as executive director is to grow the tourism association’s membership and develop the “wealth of information and revenue” for municipalities and local businesses.

“Having that information at travelers fingertips is definitely important, and I believe an organized way of presenting and making sure that businesses are highlighted and represented across this this region for us is huge,” she said.

Gawronsky hopes to show local officials and business owners how tourism can help the region. She said she’s often surprised by the amount of people who don’t view tourism as a benefit for the community. The exposure from being member of the association and having a business included in the visitor guide can bring new customers, Gawronsky said.

“We make sure that we’re tapping into areas of professionals in both sides of Highway 1 and to develop that and to get your name on that is huge as far as I’m concerned,” she said.

Gawronsky wants to highlight and ” brag about the golden nuggets” in the region. Places like the Debonair Campground in St Malo and river trails throughout southern Manitoba can become key attractions for tourists, she said.

The tourism association has also garnered attention from across the border. Gawronsky said businesses from Minnesota and North Dakota have asked for copies of the visitor guides to share with travelers.

She replaces the previous executive director, Arlene Davidson, who resigned in March 2025 citing personal reasons.
