One of the region’s best recent volleyball graduates gave back to young players this holiday season.

Sienna Driedger, who graduated Steinbach Regional Secondary School in 2024 after leading the school to a AAAA provincial banner that season, hosted a pair of training camps at the Southeast Event Centre right before Christmas.

“I’ve always had a heart for coaching, but I’ve haven’t really had the time to,” Driedger said after a session Dec. 16.

“I thought this was an ideal time, because girls are done school season but not in club yet… I honestly had no idea what the interest would be.”

Driedger said she was shocked at how quickly responses poured in after she announced the camp.

“It was quite overwhelming when all the interest started pouring in,” she said, laughing.

The sessions were built around skills Driedger wished she had learned at a younger age.

“It was really cool for me to give that back, and kind of pass it forward in a sense,” she said.

Driedger is in her second year at Trinity Western University and after a season without much playing time, is starting to become more of a piece in the Spartans attack. Trinity Western are 7-3 to start the season in CanadaWest play.

After years playing as the focal point of teams, Driedger said it was nice to be able to take a year with less pressure and focus on her own development.

“Part of the reason why I chose to go to Trinity was I didn’t want to just have playing time handed to me,” she said.

“To go there and feel like I had to work hard and have a lot to learn from the older girls was my biggest reason in going there. It was a big relief for me to go and not have so much responsibility… I grew so much in my first year.”

Driedger isn’t just taking on a more prominent role on the court this year, but also off it, as she’s one of two players featured in the school’s advertising the upcoming USports Championship. Trinity Western are hosting nationals this year.

Driedger said the team’s culture is strong, and should pay off as they hope to go on a deep run in both conference and national championship play.

“It makes it really fun to be training to that this season,” Driedger said.

“Our team is super motivated this year, everyone you can tell has that common drive, which makes practices super-fun, it makes hanging out with the team super fun… Team drama is not really a thing for us.”

Trinity Western will be in Manitoba one more time this season, as they visit Brandon Jan. 16/17.
