Theatre goers in Steinbach will have the opportunity to attend Looking Glass Theatre’s second production of the season this weekend.
Described as a “hilarious new tragicomedy” by local playwright Scot N. Moir, this is the first time The Bellefonataine Bridegroom has hit the stage.
The premise is simple.
“Piggy and Tiggy have been married for years. It’s the classic thing where a man has fallen in love with an inanimate statue and kept her in a glass box for hundreds of years, and everyone who comes into their home acts totally normal about it. Things take a surprising and deadly turn when a mysterious beauty shows up at their door, followed by an investigator on the hunt for serial killer,” the synopsis states.
Directed by Marc A. Moir, the play stars Looking Glass Theatre veterans Chris Friesen, Esther Koepnick, Laura Kathleen Turner and local comedy staple Jeremy Plett in his first appearance with the company.
Moir described the play as a spectacular piece of theatrical writing.
“A zany, strangely beautiful and brilliant offering from an exceptional playwright,” he said. “This is definitely one where you go for dinner or drinks afterwards and talk about what you’ve just experienced.”
Laura Kathleen Turner reflected on her role.
“I’ve had so much fun bringing my character to life, which is funny because she’s dead for half the show, just getting flopped like a ragdoll and dragged all over the stage and the audience,” she said. “I can’t wait for everyone to see all that hard work that’s gone into this show. It’s wild.”
Moir said audience can expect to be delighted by the show, describing it as an original piece in every sense.
“It’s exceptionally funny and bizarre, with a hint of murder mystery, with an unexpected ending that will touch an emotional chord with audiences.”
Tickets are available at lookingglasstheatre.ca.
It is not recommended for children under 13.
Steinbach performances will take place at the Steinbach Arts Centre on Feb. 13, Feb. 14, Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
