It was a busy week in Thompson, as the northern community hosted the Manitoba Winter Games.
Athletes from across the region participated, bringing home plenty of hardware.
Steinbach’s Brooklyn Wiebe carried the opening ceremonies flag for Team South, with Oakbank’s Connor Kent representing Winnipeg Gold. Bennett Mead was selected to represent Team East. All three athletes participated in curling events at the games.
Kent would go on to skip his team to a gold medal finish.
Team South were the top finishers at the games, racking up 86 medals to tie with Winnipeg Gold for the overall standings. South boasted 32 gold medals to Winnipeg Gold’s 26.
Four of those Team South golds were hung around the neck of Niverville’s Mackenna Reimer. The speed skater had an outstanding week, topping the podium in the 200 m, 1500 m, 2000 m. She was given the overall gold medal for the U14 age group, adding on a silver in the 400 m and a bronze in the relay and 3000 m.
Athletes from the region contributed 15 medals to Team South in gymnastics. Five of the region’s six representatives from wrestling medaled in their weight classes, leading to an overall team silver finish.
Team South picked up three medals in hockey/ringette, winning silver in U14 ringette and bronze in 13 male and U14 female hockey.
Futsal made it’s debut at the Manitoba Games this year, with the U14 goaltenders on both the male and female gold medal-winning Team East hailing from Oakbank. Mackenzie and Emmet Rodgers backstopped their respective teams to first-place finished in the event’s inaugural Futsal tournament.
