One of the two current candidates for the PC nomination in Steinbach has left the race.

Susan Penner, a city councillor issued a statement on Monday explaining the departure had to do with family issues.

“This is not a decision I make lightly, however, unexpected health challenges within my family now require my time and availability close to home,” she said in the statement.

She also included an endorsement for the only other candidate in the race, Michael Zwaagstra, a fellow city councillor.

“While I am disappointed to step back from this race, I am confident that this is the right decision, made easier by knowing that Michael Zwaagstra will likely be the new MLA for our area,” she said. “Throughout this process we have remained good friends and I know he will do an excellent job for the Steinbach constituency.”

Penner said she remains committed to serving the community on city council and in other ways.

“Thank you again to everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout this process. It has meant more than you know.”

While Zwaagstra is currently the only candidate, the cut-off date is not until April 19, making it possible there could still be a race for the position to replace PC MLA Kelvin Goertzen.

Zwaagstra said it’s sad that circumstances led to Penner’s announcement.

“Susan is a good colleague and a good friend of mine,” he said. “I really hope that she runs for re-election to city council. I’m always happy to work with her.”

He also expressed his admiration for Penner.

“I think she has a bright political future ahead of her and I look forward to working with her in whatever capacity in the future.”

Zwaagstra said getting endorsed by Penner means a lot to him.

“Susan’s friendship has been very important to me over the years,” he said. “I’m very pleased that she has offered me her endorsement and I’m certainly happy to accept it.”
