Niverville Nighthawks captain Adam Vigfusson will continue his hockey career in Canada.
The 2005-born forward from Gimli announced his commitment to York University in the days following Niverville’s Manitoba Junior Hockey League victory.
Vigfusson led the league in playoff points, posting 10 goals and nine assists across 13 games.
He was also named the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s RBC Community Award recipient May 5, as he was preparing with his team to start the Centennial Cup in Summerside, P.E.I.
“Feeling part of something bigger than hockey has been my favourite part about playing in Niverville,” Vigfusson said in an MJHL news release.
“I think one of, if not the biggest takeaway from playing in the MJHL is giving back to the community. It’s important to build quality relationships with people in the community, not only for the teams benefit but for your own personal experience. Being involved in the community of Niverville has been so special and I’m proud to call it a second home. The people welcomed me with open arms and I now feel like I am a part of the community.”
Vigfusson volunteered at the Niverville Elementary School and Niverville Manor senior’s centre throughout the year.
“Adam has represented the MJHL, the Nighthawks, and the community of Niverville with tremendous class over the three seasons he spent in the league,” MJHL Director of Marketing and Partnerships, Erik Swar said.
“His commitment to giving back along with his efforts to better his community do not go unnoticed and we are very proud to name Adam as the 2025-26 RBC Community Award winner. The MJHL congratulates Adam along with our 12 other ambassadors for their outstanding dedication to volunteerism in Manitoba.”
A mid-season injury after a puck struck him in the face during a practice derailed an attempt to close out the regular season in style, but his 61 points in just 40 regular season games had him 11th in the league’s points race, only behind teammate Hayden Wheddon and MJHL most valuable player Niklas Gudmundson in points-per-game by players with at least 15 games.
Selkirk’s 2007-born Rohan Guevarra nabbed an incredible 27 points in just 13 games to start the season before moving to the B.C. Hockey League’s Blackfalds Bulldogs. The University of Alaska-Anchorage commit only saw action in 16 games with Blackfalds, posting just five points.
