Area students set for high school provincials

High School athletes will be competing for top-end banners this weekend as the baseball, softball, rugby and soccer provincial championships are all set to be given out June 6.

Those looking to travel close to home can catch the soccer championships at the Steinbach Soccer Park. Eight teams will play in a single-knockout format on both the boys and girls side.

The Steinbach Regional Secondary School Sabres girls team will be taking on Léo-Rémillard at 10 a.m. June 5. The girls final will be at 2 p.m. June 6.

In the boys’ bracket, SRSS will be facing Zone 15 champions Vincent Massey (Brandon) in the quarterfinals. The game kicks off at 11:30 a.m. June 6, with the boys final 12:15 p.m. the next day.

Baseball provincials are in Selkirk this year, with Zone 13 champions SRSS in a pool with the Boissevain/Wawanesa co-op team and the Helen Betty Osborne Huskies.

The top two teams in each of the four pools will advance to the quarterfinals. The defending champion Garden City Gophers lost out to River East in their zone final and will not be defending their championship at provincials.

The baseball finals will be June 6 at 3 p.m.

Softball provincials are hosted by Pilot Mound, with Zone 13 champions St-Joachim/Réal-Bérard in a pool with Vincent Massey Brandon and Mikisew.

All 12 teams at the tournament will make the knockout round. Winning your group earns a direct berth in the quarterfinals. The finals will be at 3:15 p.m.

The provincial rugby championships will be in Brandon this year. The top two teams in the Winnipeg league and the top two teams in the Westman league play a cross-over semi-final against each other. Steinbach Regional made the leap to play 15s this season after a few years dominating sevens.

The team had a solid performance to set up provincials, winning their home sevens tournament May 29. The Steinbach boys tournament featured a final of two St Paul’s teams.

The Sabres will play Souris in the semi-finals, with the finals set for 11:30 a.m. June 6 at John Reilly Field. Dauphin has won the past three years at provincials. On the boys side, St Paul’s has dominated, winning every championship since 2014.
