The Steinbach Pistons are warning the community after an unknown person emailed their vendors to try and get fees for the upcoming season.
The fraudsters impersonated Pistons director of sales and marketing Jamie Roy, emailing from jamieroysteinbachpistons@yahoo.com.
“This individual has no affiliation with the Steinbach Pistons organization, and this activity is being taken very seriously,” an email from the real Jamie Roy reads.
“Please do not respond to or engage with this email under any circumstances. All official communication from the Steinbach Pistons will come exclusively from our verified organizational domain. Any email that does not originate from our official domain should be disregarded immediately.”
Anyone who responded or made a payment to the the fraudulent email is asked to contact the RCMP at 204-326-1234.
A spokesperson from the RCMP said they were not aware of any other teams or rinks that have been targeted by this kind of scam, but reminded the public to be vigilant.
Tips include staying alert for deals that sound “too good to be true,” strangers contacting you and to protect your personal information/verify the person’s identity.
”The grandchild calling you out of the blue for bail money may not be real. The person that’s threatening to cut your cable if you don’t pay the overdue bill you didn’t know existed may not be from the telecommunications company,” a statement reads.
“Ask pointed questions to confirm identity and, if need be, call people or companies back at known phone numbers.”
Potential fraud victims can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre either online or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
Questions can be directed to the Pistons at their proper email address, info@steinbachpistons.ca.
