Former Piston Amsbaugh signs pro deal in ECHL

Ian Amsbaugh has turned a late-season stint in the ECHL into a full-time contract.

The 23-year-old forward joined the Tulsa Oilers after the end of his final collegiate season, recording a plus-five victory while scoring his first professional goal with the franchise.

The Oilers picked up Amsbaugh after the end of the Adrian College season, where Amsbaugh finished with 108 career points.

“It is always great for players to get a taste of the pro game at the end of the season,” head coach Rob Murray said in a Tulsa news release.

“Ian came in and showed he could play and produce at our level. Talking to him this summer, I told him he needs to have a shoot-first mentality; he agreed, and we are excited to have him back and to see what he can bring.”

Amsbaugh spent a memorable season in Steinbach, scoring 58 points in 58 regular season games and helping the team to a Turnbull Cup win.

He also was one of the team’s top performers at that year’s Centennial Cup in Portage, finishing with five points in four games.
