August building permits set new record

Building permits are hitting new levels in Steinbach.

Coun. Susan Penner made the motion to approve the August building permits during the Tuesday council meeting.

While the month had a total permit value of $27.9 million, it was the number of residential units that stood out.

Residential permits exceeded $25 million, including 145 multi-family units and 3 single- or two-family units for a total of 148.

“That’s the biggest month in Steinbach’s history for residential units,” she said.

It was led largely by a permit valued at $12.5 million that will see 66 new residences on Woodhaven Ave.

Others included a 36-unit multi-family development on Main Street valued at $3.6 million and a 33-unit dwelling on Market Blvd. valued at $5 million.

“This is very exciting,” she said.

So far this year $63.7 million in residential building permits has been approved for a total of 299 dwelling units. That dollar amount includes new builds and accessory structures such as decks, storage sheds and pools.

This year has also seen $25.3 million in commercial, industrial, school or church permits issued, for more than 84,000 commercial square footage added.

With year-to-date total of all categories at $88.9 million, Coun. Michael Zwaagstra said it seems like they will hit $100 million this year.

“It’s certainly good to see the strong growth in our city continuing,” he said. “It seems like the years of $100 million in building permits per year is becoming standard in Steinbach and that’s good to see.”
