SRSS Sabres drop to 0-2 on the season

The Steinbach Regional Sabres varsity football team went to Brandon Sept. 18, but couldn’t come back with a win.

The Sabres fell 20-7 in a hard-fought contest, as a late fumble on a third and short play with the visitors down just six points dooming any chances of a comeback attempt.

“The game was sloppy for both teams,” program coordinator Jamie Peters said in his game recap, citing some mental mistakes throughout the game as the reason for the loss.

“The field was soft, the balls were wet, the cameras didn’t work, and it was back to old-fashioned, smash-mouth backyard football. Unfortunately, the Sabres were unable to match the physicality of the Vikings.”

The program’s junior varsity team was in action after press time Sept. 23.

The Sabres varsity team hosts Crocus Plans Sept. 25th at A.D. Penner Park for Senior Night. One of those seniors being honoured is standout wide receiver Ben Webster, who announced his commitment to join teammate Parker Mantie at the University of Manitoba next season.

“(Webster) has a USports body already and has improved so much yearly,” U of M recruiting coordinator Sean Ollie said in a Bisons social media post announcing the commitment.

“I know the (offensive) staff is excited to use him in numerous positions in the future”

SPRINGFIELD

In the AAAA tier 2 ranks, the Springfield Sabres also dropped a tough game, losing to West Kildonan 15-6. The Sabres defense was able to hold the Wolverines to just 120 yards, but a punt return touchdown was the differnce as the visitors fell by a touchdown.

River Wiebe racked up 106 total yards and a touchdown for Springfield in the loss, which moved the team down to 1-1 on the season.
