Volunteers gathered to plant over 200 trees as part of TD Tree Days on Oct. 4 at the Rosenthal Nature Park, northwest of Mitchell.
Ken Fosty, a certified arborist and forestry specialist for Tree Planting Manitoba, coordinated the event alongside the RM of Hanover public works department.
He said this is the 16th annual planting for the TD event.
This year they planted 30,000 trees across Canada. Approximately 590,000 trees have been planted since the program began in 2010.
Fosty said this year saw them plant in Brandon, Portage, Winnipeg, Headingley, Teulon and Mitchell.
“Next year we hope to expand to more communities,” he said.
Fosty said he’s proud to be involved in greening communities.
“The trees that we’re planting today will provide multiple benefits including shade, shelter, wildlife habitat, wildlife corridors, soil and water retention as well as clean air,” he said.
Manitoba’s official provincial tree, the white spruce was planted along with the Scots pine.
Steinbach TD Bank manager Mallory Cabana said it’s great to see an event like this attract more than just fellow employees.
“It’s great that you have people show up just because they have a similar interest in doing something for the community,” she said.
