Kehler a force of nature in weather service firm

A Steinbach resident has launched a private weather services firm, aiming to fill a hole in the province’s weather forecasting market.

Scott Kehler and Matthieu Desorcy are the forces behind Weatherlogics, a Winnipeg-based weather services and consulting firm. Weatherlogics provides weather forecasting and researching services to a range of different clients.

“Right now we’re focusing a lot on farmers, so agriculture is a big part of it. But on the corporate side, we’re working with construction companies, media, and transportation companies to provide weather forecasts for them as well,” said Kehler.

Kehler, the firm’s chief scientist, and Desorcy, the firm’s chief meteorologist, met while studying for their undergraduate degrees at the University of Manitoba. Kehler said right now the pair are focusing on weather forecasting, but in the long-term Kehler will focus on weather research and Desorcy will focus on day-to-day weather forecasting.

Kehler has had the idea to launch Weatherlogics for a while.

“I’ve always wanted to get into the private sector of weather because right now, most of the weather forecasting comes from the government and places like Environment Canada,” he said.

“In Canada, the private sector of meteorology is pretty small. I’ve always thought it was a great opportunity to develop that sector here in Canada and locally in Manitoba.”

Kehler notes private sector weather forecasting in the United States is a lot larger than in Canada and that there are a lot of larger weather forecasting companies that aren’t run by the government.

“I saw the opportunity to do a similar thing here,” he said.

One service Weatherlogics offers is a forecast subscription specifically for farmers. When clients subscribe, they receive a five day weather forecast by email. This allows clients to plan their time efficiently according to the weather, which can be important during seeding or harvesting time.
