La Broquerie council is taking advantage of its newfound authority to set speed limits on municipal roads.

Council gave first reading last week to a 50 km/h speed limit bylaw on all roadways in the LUD.

Rural roads south of Highway 52 would carry an 80 km/h speed limit, while rural roads south of Provincial Road 303 would be governed at 90 km/h, unless otherwise posted.

The bylaw also contains a few 60 km/h zones for some rural residential areas between Steinbach and La Broquerie.

Travel on Loewen Boulevard between Hirschfeld Road North and Highway 210 would be limited to 70 km/h.

Councillor Darrell Unger questioned the wisdom of reducing truck route speed limits to 80 km/h from 90 km/h.

The municipality plans to erect bilingual signage next year, Reeve Lewis Weiss said. CAO Anne Burns said the municipality should also hold an open house to explain the changes once they’re passed.

In March, council supported a group of community leaders pushing to extend the 80 km/h zone on Highway 52 at Provincial Road 302.

That request must still be approved by Manitoba Infrastructure, though municipalities are now free to set speed limits on municipal roadways, under the Traffic and Transportation Modernization Act, which came into effect earlier this spring.
