The Town of Niverville is reaching out to its residents to ask them what they would like to see when it comes to law enforcement and policing in the community.

At an open house event in Niverville on Tuesday the municipality asked residents to fill out a policing survey asking residents if they are satisfied with the current level of policing that Niverville has, and asking what residents would identify to council as the policing goals and priorities for the town.

The survey also asked residents if they would be willing to pay an additional property tax should council consider establishing a municipal police force for the town of Niverville.

Niverville is currently serviced by St Pierre RCMP.

Mayor Myron Dyck said some Niverville residents have expressed concerns about policing, and that prompted the town to put out the survey and seek more information from residents.

Dyck said some of the concerns brought to council in the past have included slow response times and a detachment that some residents believe is too far away from the town.

“We had a petition presented to council about a month ago with several hundred signatures on it, and it was really a request that council look into policing in the community,” Dyck said.

“Residents have asked that in light of some of the incidents and break-ins we have had and in light of the community growing, is it best for us to continue what we are doing, or should we create a municipal police force?”

Dyck added a municipal police force for Niverville would likely see property taxes rise in the community, and they want to know what residents think about additional costs for the service.
