The Town of Niverville says it is taking the first steps towards improving law enforcement and policing in the community, by figuring out what a policing study for the community would cost.

At a Niverville council meeting on Tuesday evening, council said they will instruct staff to figure out what it would cost to conduct a policing study for the community.

“This is the first step,” Niverville mayor Myron Dyck said. “We are saying, ‘We want to know what this kind of study will cost.”

“So we are asking staff to source out companies that do this kind of work, and then try to get some sort of cost.”

Niverville is currently serviced by St Pierre RCMP, but Dyck said a number of Niverville residents have expressed concerns about policing in the community, with some of the concerns brought to council in the past including slow response times and a detachment that some residents believe is too far away from the town.

“We had a petition presented to council about a month ago with several hundred signatures on it, and it was really a request that council look into policing in the community,” Dyck said back in October.

Dyck said once a cost can be determined for a study, council can decide how to move forward.

“We have to try and get some sort of scope to it so they can figure out what that fee would be,” Dyck said. “And from there council can make a decision on how they wish to proceed.”
