La Broquerie council signed off Wednesday on a fence plan submitted by Reeve Lewis Weiss.

Rising from the council table to join his wife and business partner, Nettie Weiss, at the delegation desk, Weiss detailed how he plans to satisfy an unfulfilled fencing provision contained in a 2006 conditional use order that council voted to enforce in April.

Weiss was required to build a fence 6.5 feet in height by Aug. 31, to shield his vehicle recycling yard from passing motorists.

On Wednesday, Weiss offered up a brief typed plan and hand-drawn map showing two L-shaped fences at the corners of his property nearest Highway 52.

The fences, which will span a total of 955 feet when complete, will be made of steel poles and sheet metal. A portion on the east end of the property will be eight feet tall, while the remainder will be six feet in height, Weiss said.

Councillor Alvin Derksen, who led the charge to enforce the dated zoning ordinance, said he wouldn’t quibble with the half-foot variation.

Weiss told The Carillon he opted for the height stipulated in the original 2006 order, and deemed council’s decision to pass a new resolution without rescinding the old one “illegal.”

Weiss told his colleagues the fence would be long enough to contain all derelict vehicles. The business keeps anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 vehicles on hand, down from 1,500 to 1,600 in years past, he said.

The reeve said he plans to complete the work without the help of a contractor, and will get started as soon as an order of pipe arrives.

He stated he didn’t know how much the fence materials will cost, and was confident he could secure an extension from council if he showed good progress by the Aug. 31 deadline.

Nettie Weiss told The Carillon that vehicle recycling provides a valuable service to the area, adding media exposure from the fence ordeal resulted in a bump in business.
