Does Eastman sing? You bet it does. Music is a big part of the Eastman region. All you need to do is take in one of the many musicals, concerts, plays, or a church service, and you will see the fruits of so much talent that the Eastman region has to offer. The Eastman Youth Choir (EMYC) is part of that experience.

As a high school student I was part of the regional choir in my area. There are three regional choirs in Manitoba. Reflecting back, it allowed me to not only improve my music skills and learn to perform in public, but also to make new friends (many of which I still stay in touch with today, 30 years later).

Many of those singers went on to have careers in music, and are now teachers, directors, and performers all over the country. My choral friend, Hugh, even sang at Carnegie Hall.

Now as a parent of two children who have sung with the EMYC, I can say that I see those benefits, as well as others, in them as well. So what is EMYC? The Eastman Youth Choir is a choir open to teenagers grades 9-12 from the area that requires a three weekend commitment. Two weekends are spent rehearsing and the third weekend is the tour/workshop weekend.

The 2018 tour is Oct. 11-14 and includes stops in several Eastman schools, a concert at the Manitoba Legislature, entertaining seniors at a couple retirement homes, singing the national anthem at a Manitoba Moose game, a full day choral workshop, and finishing off with a evening dessert concert on Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Heartland Church in Landmark.

The best way to support choral music and the arts in Eastman is to support the artists and the choir allows businesses and individuals to sponsor a singer. We have singers who wouldn’t be able to join EMYC if it were not for the generous sponsors who help subsidize their costs.

Anyone interested in more information about the choir or sponsorship opportunities can find more information about EMYC on Instagram @eastmanyouthchoir, Facebook @EastmanYouthChoir or on their webpage https://emyc.weebly.com/ #EMYC2018.
