A former manager at Steinbach’s Superstore stood before a judge Thursday and admitted to stealing more than $12,000 in merchandise over a 10-month period.

Crown prosecutors ordered a pre-sentence report and are expected to seek incarceration for Joseph Thomas Papai, 48, who pleaded guilty to one count of theft over $5,000.

Judge Julie Frederickson was told Papai stole $9,700 worth of high-priced electronics from the store, then returned the items and credited himself.

He also stole outright $2,600 worth of smaller items between Aug. 26, 2016 and June 26, 2017.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled in Steinbach provincial court Dec. 20.
