When the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) Sabres fell behind 3-0 to Gabrielle-Roy in the finals of the zone 13 baseball championship, the mood in their dugout never wavered.
The Sabres responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, and didn’t give up another run en-route to a 13-3 win.
“The guys were very relaxed and focused, I don’t think it rattled them at all,” Sabres head coach Clinton Brandt said on the early deficit.
“There was no nervousness, there was just confidence that we would get the job done.”
Kaden Coldwell got the start for the Sabres. “(Coldwell) is very efficient, he doesn’t get behind in counts, throws lots of strikes,” Brandt said.
“The sky is the limit for him, (he’s) incredibly talented, lots of potential. We’re just glad to have him.”
The Grade 9 player only allowed a single hit after the first inning, throwing every pitch for Steinbach in the final.
“I’ve coached him before, and I know the moment never rattles him,” Brandt said.
“There was really no hesitation amongst the coaches as to who was getting the ball.”
Any hopes of a last ditch comeback for Gabrielle-Roy were dashed in the bottom of the sixth, as Seth Bergman crushed a ball over the centrefield fence for a home run.
“We have a very deep roster,” Brandt said.
“Our batting order, one through nine, they can all hit, we have confidence in all of them. We have players off the bench who can come in and hit, that’s not a concern for us.”
In winning the zone 13 title, SRSS qualifies for provincials, which will be held in Brandon from June 2-4. Brandt said he’s not sure what to expect from the Sabres at provincials, as there has been no inter-zone play this season, and there hasn’t been league play for the last three years.
“It’s very much unknown,” he said.
“We just want to put our best foot forward and see where that leads us.”
