If you plan to take your horse to a competition in 2027, now is a good time to review your vaccination records. Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1 and EHV-4) can spread quickly when horses come together at barns, shows, trailers, and warm-up areas. Keeping vaccinations current is an important part of protecting your horse and the wider equine community.

Equestrian Canada (EC) requires horses attending EC-sanctioned competitions to meet vaccination requirements. The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, scheduled for March 29 to April 3, 2027, is one Manitoba event for which it is important to plan to meet these requirements. Current EC rules require vaccination within six months plus a 21-day grace period before arrival, with no vaccination within seven days of arrival. These rules help protect horses and event biosecurity by ensuring regular vaccination schedules—not just last-minute compliance.

Before heading to a competition:

· Review your horse’s vaccination records well before the show.

· Talk to your veterinarian about an appropriate ongoing vaccination schedule.

· Ensure Equine Influenza and EHV-1 & EHV-4 vaccinations are current according to EC requirements.

· Remember that vaccinations cannot be given within seven clear days before arrival at an EC-sanctioned competition.

· Keep your vaccination documentation available in case competition management requests it.

· If your horse cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, obtain the required letter from your veterinarian before submitting your entry.

A real-life scenario

Megan plans to take her mare to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in 2027. When she checks her records a few weeks before the show, she realizes her mare’s last required booster was given too long ago to meet the competition requirements. Megan contacts her veterinarian, who recommends a vaccination schedule that will bring the mare up to date while leaving enough time before the competition. By checking early, Megan avoids a last-minute problem and has the required documentation ready when she arrives at the show.

Vaccination requirements are one part of responsible competition preparation. Manitoba Horse Council members have access to information, programs and resources that support responsible horse ownership and participation in Manitoba’s equestrian community.

Whether you’re preparing for a major competition or a local event, don’t leave vaccination planning until the last minute. Review your records, speak with your veterinarian, and check the current competition requirements before you enter. A little advance planning helps keep your horse healthy and ensures you’re ready when competition day arrives.

Rules and requirements can change. Always check the current Equestrian Canada rules and the competition’s prize list or entry information for the requirements that apply to your event.
